The Grad Club (Queen's Campus)
The most underused student food resource on campus. The Grad Club serves lunch and dinner in a pub setting with prices that are lower than most off-campus restaurants. Burgers, wraps, and daily specials regularly come in under $12. Not exciting enough to go every week, but reliable enough to keep in rotation. Open to all Queen's students.
The Alibi Room
Student pub on Princess Street with food that's actually decent. Pub standards — nachos, burgers, sandwiches — at prices where you can eat and have a beer for around $20-25 total, which is reasonable for a sit-down meal. Lunch specials are cheaper.
Thai Cuisine (multiple locations on Princess)
Kingston has several Thai restaurants on Princess Street. Lunch specials at most of them run $10-13 and include soup or appetizer. The quality varies by location but the value is consistent. This is the reliable under-$15 lunch option when you want something more than fast food.
When You Want the Fastest Possible Food
Pita Pit (Princess Street)
Fast, filling, $10-12 for a loaded pita. The lunch lineup moves quickly. A reliable option when you have 20 minutes between classes and want something that will actually keep you full until dinner.
Chez Piggy (for when you're feeling slightly more than broke)
This one stretches the under-$15 threshold but earns its spot — the lunch menu has items in the $14-16 range that are genuinely worth the extra few dollars. The courtyard is one of the better outdoor eating spots in Kingston when the weather cooperates.
Burger King / McDonald's (Princess Street)
They exist, you know where they are, and during exam season when you need 800 calories for $5 and maximum speed, they're functional. No further commentary required.
When You Want Something Actually Good
Olivea (Princess Street)
Mediterranean-influenced food at a price point that's slightly above fast food but well below sit-down restaurant pricing. Worth it for a treat meal that doesn't destroy the budget. The takeout line moves faster than the dine-in wait.
Le Chien Noir (Ontario Street)
Brunch on weekends. The lineup is real and the wait can be 30-45 minutes on Saturday mornings. But the food is genuinely good and the price is reasonable for a proper brunch. Go at 9:30am to avoid the worst of the wait.
Pan Chancho Bakery (Johnson Street)
Sandwiches, soups, and baked goods made well. Lunch runs $12-16 depending on what you get. The bread alone is worth the trip if you're a bread person.
Late Night (After 10pm)
Kingston's late-night food options are limited but functional:
- La Salle Pizza: The classic Queen's late-night option. Picks up by slice, open until 3am on weekends.
- Bubba's Sulky Lounge: Late-night food with a bar attached. Food is what it is, but it's open when other things are closed.
- Delivery apps: Skip the Dishes and DoorDash both operate in Kingston. At 11pm, the markup and delivery fees make them expensive compared to walking, but they're functional if you're studying and can't leave.
